On Friday 7 June 2024, the European Culture Award Gala will be held for the first time at the Philharmonie Luxembourg in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, from 19:30.
The programming aims to "open up" the traditional concept of culture across generations.
Frank Elstner, a well-known radio and television entertainer, has been a popular presenter and aired on some of the best broadcast slots. Even in times of streaming services and an oversupply of entertainment, the Linz native's formats stood out in “people's collective memory”, the organisers noted.
Elstner had already achieved fame as a radio presenter in Luxembourg exactly 60 years ago, which he describes as “the best time of my professional life”, and then he became known on television for outstanding ratings. Major show creations such as “Wetten, dass...?” or the Sunday hit parade are still part of his memorable work, which was crowned with a number of awards – including the Grand Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The television star will thus be honoured with the European Culture Award for his life's work.
Special guests are also expected, including pop star Ronan Keating, singers Adel Tawil and Jeanette Biedermann, Egyptian soprano Fatma Said and tenor Rolando Villazón, alongside the Vienna Boys' Choir and the Vienna Girls Choir, violinist Lisa Batiashvili and European Song Contest participant TALI.
