The eleventh edition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg Remich-Région Moselle race took place in Remich on Sunday 30 June 2024.
As reported by the organisers, about 2,600 triathletes from 44 nations took on the challenge of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running to secure one of the qualifying spots for the VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which is taking place in Taupō, New Zealand from 14 to 15 December 2024.
The 1.9 km swim took place in the Moselle, from where the 90 km bike course led along the banks of the river towards Grevenmacher, before the hilly and challenging passages via Canach, Syren, Mondorf-les-Bains and Schengen. The final 21.1 km run led participants along a circuit along the Moselle riverside promenade in Remich before they could receive their hard-earned medals at the finish in front of the Remich outdoor pool.
In the men's race, Belgium's Michiel Stockman finished in first place (4:04.43), followed by fellow Belgians Devlin Derudder (4:08.14) and Sven Vandenbroucke (4:09.09) in second and third place, respectively.
In the women's race, the victory went to Kyra Meulenberg from the Netherlands (4:37.20), followed by two German starters, Larissa Jasper in second place (4:38.39) and Anja Fachbach in third place (4:38.50).
The Luxembourg middle-distance triathlon championship was also held as part of the event. Anne Reiser won the women's race (5:04.33), just ahead of last year's runner-up Danièle Flammang (5:05.17) and last year's winner Sally Dickes (5:16.12).
In the men's race, Moris Brust was crowned the new Luxembourg middle-distance triathlon champion (4:22.50), Eric Gonderinger secured second place (4:24.25) and Jang Belche came third (4:30.48).
Felix Eing, race director of the IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg Remich-Région Moselle, drew a positive conclusion from the weekend event: "For the eleventh time, we were able to experience an exciting triathlon weekend against the beautiful backdrop of the Moselle region and in Remich, and where we can offer everyone the right sporting challenge with our NightRun Remich as the opening event on Friday evening, the IRONKIDS Swim & Run on Saturday and of course our main event, the IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg Remich-Région Moselle on Sunday, where we welcomed around 2,600 participants from 44 nations".
He thanked everyone involved in making the event a success, including 800+ volunteers.
"It is nice to see little Luxembourg represented on the big IRONMAN world map. Not only the Moselle region, but the whole of Luxembourg benefits from major events such as the IRONMAN 70.3., which brings numerous international athletes and their companions to Luxembourg," added Gilles Estgen, President of the Office Régional du Tourisme Région Moselle Luxembourgeoise. "The Moselle region is of course known for its beautiful nature and its excellent wine products, and I am happy every year that we can show the region from a sporting side, which underlines the versatility of the Luxembourg Moselle."
