On Wednesday 25 February 2026, Luxembourg's Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that a knife attack involving two fourteen-year-old girls had taken place earlier that day.

According to the authorities, the Grand Ducal Police were alerted at around 12:30 to a stabbing linked to the Lycée Technique du Centre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.

Initial findings indicated that a verbal exchange had occurred at approximately 12:15 in the school's shared canteen, stemming from prior disagreements between the two girls.

The physical altercation took place outside the school building, on a public street, not within the school grounds. Nevertheless, the Public Prosecutor's Office stated that there was a direct link to the school context, as the individuals involved had initially been inside the canteen and the incident originated from the exchange that occurred there.

During the confrontation in the street, one of the girls allegedly pulled out a knife and suddenly attacked the other girl. The victim reportedly reacted quickly, which helped limit the consequences of the attack. The injuries sustained are not considered serious and the victim's life is not in danger.

The Public Prosecutor's Office, added that the police and emergency services had responded swiftly. The injured girl was taken to the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) for examination and treatment.

The alleged perpetrator fled the scene of the incident but was apprehended shortly afterward by law enforcement officers. The weapon was recovered and seized.

On the instructions of the public prosecutor, the Judicial Police's juvenile delinquency and abuse section was tasked with the investigation to establish the precise circumstances of the incident.

As both individuals are minors, the case was referred to a juvenile judge, who ordered the suspected attacker's placement in the Centre Pénitentiaire de Luxembourg (CPL) - also known as Schrassig Prison. The authorities noted that the socio-educational security unit for minors in Dreiborn is currently at full capacity. The investigation is ongoing.

In a subsequent statement issued on Thursday 26 February 2026, the Public Prosecutor's Office said the incident should not be viewed as an isolated case, but rather as part of a broader context involving judicial monitoring and challenges related to the supervision of minors in difficulty, particularly with regard to access to juvenile psychiatric services.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, certain measures that had been decided upon previously could not be implemented in time due to a lack of available places in appropriate facilities.

The statement emphasised that mental health plays a crucial role in the development of minors and acknowledged that existing facilities do not always allow for adequate support in these situations. "This problem is not new, but it is a long-standing issue that requires lasting solutions," it said, adding that such structural constraints may have contributed to the escalation that culminated in Wednesday's attack.

The judicial authorities will continue analysing the incident in order to assess the situation in light of preventive measures that had been ordered but not implemented due to the lack of space in a specialised institution. The Public Proscecutor's Office stressed that the safety of those concerned and the protection of minors remain "absolute priorities" for the judicial authorities.
