On Thursday 8 January 2026, Esch-sur-Sûre municipality announced a proposal to appoint Mireille Welter as the new mayor, as part of a new composition of the municipal executive to be put to a vote at an upcoming municipal council meeting.
According to the municipality, the proposal follows the resignation of Mayor Laurent Hilger on 16 December 2025, with the citizens’ list “Mat iech!” putting forward a revised executive structure to ensure continuity in the municipality’s governance.
“This proposal is intended to ensure continuity in political work and to allow the municipality to continue to be governed constructively, transparently and responsibly, with calm and confidence,” the Esch-sur-Sûre municipality noted.
