On Monday 8 September 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Culture, Eric Thill, announced the launch of Luxembourgish Language Day, to be celebrated for the first time on Friday 26 September 2025.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the creation of a national day for the Luxembourgish language and culture forms part of Measure 38 of the Action Plan for the Luxembourgish Language, which was adopted by the Government Council on 14 December 2022. Each year on 26 September - coinciding with the European Day of Languages - Luxembourgish language and multilingualism will be celebrated across schools, adult education and research, as well as in cultural fields including literature, music and theatre.
The Ministry noted that the 2025 edition of Luxembourgish Language Day is being held under the motto “Talking with - Luxembourgish connects”. With the support of various partners, the Ministry of Culture is placing particular emphasis on Luxembourgish as a vibrant and versatile language. The promotion of Luxembourgish will occur mainly through greater visibility in the public sphere, with the main objective this year being to strengthen Luxembourgish as a living language and encourage its active use by highlighting its central role in Luxembourg’s multilingual society.
During the press conference, Minister Thill emphasised: “A language is not only a means of communication, it builds bridges and connects. Luxembourgish reflects our origins, our history and our common identity. Speaking Luxembourgish means sharing a living heritage, but also preparing for the future by strengthening cohesion and promoting open interaction with each other.”
As part of this first edition, a varied programme will be offered across the country. Events include conferences, concerts, exhibitions, theatre workshops and educational activities related to the Luxembourgish language, as well as the release of new publications focusing on Luxembourgish and multilingualism.
The full programme of Luxembourgish Language Day is available here.
The Ministry of Culture noted that the 2025 programme is only the starting point, as further efforts will be needed to strengthen the promotion of the Luxembourgish language. In this context, the Ministry has launched a call for projects ahead of the 2026 edition, inviting cultural actors, schools and interested individuals to submit ideas and initiatives to help enrich and further develop this new national tradition.
