The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in June and July 2024.
International protection
A total of 109 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in June 2024 (down from 141 in May 2024 and from 199 in June 2023). In July 2024, the number of applications rose to 148 (190 in July 2023). To date this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 972 applications for international protection - down from 1,256 received during the same period in 2023.
204 decisions on asylum applications were taken in June 2024, with 61 applicants being granted refugee status (53 in May). In July, 230 decisions were taken, with 79 applicants receiving refugee status.
So far in 2024, most applications have come from Eritrean nationals (228), followed by Syrians (130), Colombians (51), Venezuleans (47) and nationals of Guinea (44).
Temporary protection
A total of 84 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in June 2024 (up from 75 in May). In July, 59 people applied for this status. So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 493 such applications.
A total of 84 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in June, with 64 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (59 in May); 20 were rejected. In July, 64 decisions were taken, with 57 applicants receiving the status and seven applications being rejected.
Most applicants in June (79) and July (58) were Ukrainian nationals. Ukrainians have also represented the largest group (439) among applicants for temporary protection so far this year. There have also been applications from thirteen Algerian nationals, six Moroccan nationals and six Turkish nationals, as well as 29 nationals of other unspecified countries during this period.
