On Wednesday 7 August 2024, the Grand Ducal Police issued a statement in relation to thefts from unlocked vehicles.

The police noted that they are "repeatedly" receiving reports of thefts from vehicles that have not been locked.

The perpetrators usually target valuables, electronic devices, bags and wallets that are visible in the vehicle and can be stolen particularly easily from unlocked cars. The police added that the perpetrators often systematically test the door handles of several cars until they get to a car that is not locked.

In this context, the police have advised that people lock their vehicles even if they are only gone for a short time (e.g. when returning a shopping trolley). No valuables should be left in the vehicle and all windows should be closed.

The police added that thieves often steal garage and house keys from vehicles that are parked in front of a residence and can thus gain access to the building. As such, the public is advised not to leave (garage) remote controls or keys in vehicles that have been parked in front of or near their home.
