Luxembourg's weather portal, MeteoLux, has upgraded and extended its weather warning for heavy rainfall in the Grand Duchy.
The previously announced yellow alert (indicating "potential danger") remains in place for northern Luxembourg from 07:00 on Friday 17 May until 07:00 on Saturday 18 May 2024. Rainfall with accumulations ranging from 25 to 40 l/m² are expected during this period.
An orange alert ("danger") is now in place for the south of the country, with "very heavy" rainfall accumulations of up to 60 l/m² likely during the aforementioned period.
Update: An orange flood risk alert is now in place for southern Luxembourg from 14:00 on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday. MeteoLux warned of "minor flooding which may lead to local flooding and damage".
As of 10:00 on Friday, the flood warning service was "on standby". The flood alert website also advised members of the public to "be prepared" for potential flooding, stating that the "predicted heavy rainfall is causing water levels to rise continuously today, particularly in the south of the country". Nevertheless, as of Friday morning, there was "only a risk of minor, very localised flooding". There was no reported risk of flooding at the Moselle river at the time of writing.
Update: As of 13:53 on Friday, the flood warning service is in "pre-alert status", with a "risk of minor floods generating possible damages in flood prone areas". Water levels are rising steadily; particularly quickly on the Alzette river. See inondations.lu for further updates.
On Friday, the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) also issued a statement in which it warned of possible flooding. Residents of at-risk areas were asked to take the necessary precautions and to continually monitor flood alerts on the website inondations.lu and weather forecasts on meteolux.lu.
Due to the weather conditions, the park in Gasperich is currently closed to the public.
