The Grand Ducal Police announced that a brawl was reported in Differdange on the morning of Tuesday 14 May 2024.
This took place on Rue Jeannot Kremer at around 04:00 on Tuesday morning. When a police patrol arrived, the officers discovered a large crowd forming a circle. An injured man was lying on the ground and the police officers immediately rushed to the individual’s aid.
The police noted there were repeated aggressive verbal attacks during the intervention, towards the officers as well. The police patrol was able to identify an individual suspected of having started the fight. The officers described him as “aggressive and disrespectful” upon being asked to show his identification documents.
Other people from the neighbouring football stadium joined the crowd. According to the police, they “obstructed” the way and hindered the police officers in action. Around 100 people gathered, resulting in escalating tension. As the “riot” continued, further interventions were required. Small groups formed which were “uncooperative” and behaved in a violent and “provocative” manner towards the police officers. On individual attacked a police officer and had to be restrained.
People threw objects at the police officers from the upper floor of a building, and they threatened and insulted the police force until the latter were able to calm the angry crowd.
Shortly after, another major brawl broke out in a nearby bar, which required further police action. Overall, around 20 police units intervened on-site to restore public order. Shortly before 07:00, the last people made their way home.
The incident was recorded with an investigation still ongoing. Two people were taken to the police station for further official action. Various reports were drawn up for public offences including assault and battery, threats, insults to police officers, driving licence withdrawals and a fine for public urination. The public prosecutor's office was informed of the operation.
