Luxembourg's national statistical institute, STATEC, has reported that the country's population reached 672,050 as of 1 January 2024.
STATEC noted that this represented growth of 1.7% over one year (660,809 residents as of 1 January 2023) - among the lowest growth rates in the past decade (ranging from 2% to 2.5%). During the 2020 and 2021 COVID-19 pandemic years, this rate stood at just 1.4% and 1.7% respectively.
In 2022, the population had grown by 2.4%, although STATEC noted that the arrival of Ukrainian refugees had contributed to this increase.
STATEC noted that most of the population growth in 2023 was due to migration: 26,964 newcomers arrived in the country (down 14.2% over one year) and 16,588 left (down 3.7%). Net migration (i.e. the different between immigrants and emigrants) was equal to 10,376 people.

STATEC also found that 317,678 non-Luxembourgers were living in the Grand Duchy as of 1 January 2024 - 12.4% of whom were born in Luxembourg. The number of people acquiring Luxembourgish nationality rose by 13.4%, from 10,499 in 2022 to 11,904 in 2023.
The average age of the population as of 1 January 2024 was 40.6 years for women and 39.2 years for men; foreign residents were "significantly" younger than Luxembourgers.
In 2023, a total of 6,320 babies were born in Luxembourg, 175 fewer than in 2022. The fertility rate of 1.25 children per woman (1.31 in 2022) was the lowest seen in several decades. STATEC added that this trend can be seen in other European countries.
The number of deaths stood at 4,431 in 2023, just eighteen fewer than in 2022. The average age of the deceased was 78 years (81 for women, 74.9 for men).
Moreover, there were 2,539 marriages in 2023 (up 2.6% compared to 2022), including 47 same-sex marriages. The number of divorces rose by 9.3% over one year to 1,359. The average length of marriages dissolved in Luxembourg in 2023 was 12.9 years.
