A red weather warning for flooding remains in place in southern Luxembourg on Wednesday 3 January 2024.

This red alert is expected to remain in place in the south all day, with significant overflows possible, even in rarely flooded areas, according to MeteoLux. An orange warning for minor flooding is in place in the north of the country.

Moreover, a yellow warning for strong winds (gusts of 65-80 km/h possible) is in place across the Grand Duchy from 09:00 to 23:00 on Wednesday.

The flood warning service is currently in "alert status". There is a risk of major flooding along Luxembourg's rivers - except for the Moselle. According to the website www.inondations.lu on Wednesday morning, water levels on the Alzette and its tributaries continued to rise overnight. Levels crossed the alert threshold in Bissen, Mersch and Ettelbruck. The Sûre also surpassed alert levels in Diekirch. Updates are expected twice per day or as the situation changes.

The capital has also been impacted by the flooding, with the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) sharing photos of the aftermath on social media. The VdL noted that several car parks, a cycling path (PC1) and a playground (Bisserwee) had been closed on Tuesday 2 January 2024 due to the flood risk. Several Christmas markets had also been closed later in the day.

According to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), as of Wednesday morning, the 112 emergency number responded to reports of floods in fifteen buildings and of damage to four "objects" such as facades. Six trees had also fallen and several road closures were reported.
