The Grand Ducal Police have confirmed that police departments across Luxembourg responded to around 55 cases of disturbances and around 45 cases of disputes and arguments on New Year’s Eve.
There were reports of loud music, inebriated individuals and people in public spaces and private apartments, neighbourhood disputes due to noise pollution, several disturbances linked to firecrackers and violations of fireworks ban. The police added that, in most such cases, the individuals in question were able to calm down or expressed understanding of the disturbance caused.
In two cases, people rebelled against police officers.
At around 04:30, a driver resisted the police when they tried to check his vehicle at the Bouillon car park in Luxembourg-Hollerich. He reportedly punched and bit the officers and was taken to the police station. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and several grams of cannabis were found in the car. Due to his positive alcohol test, the police revoked his driver’s licence. He refused to take a rapid drug test. Since he posed a danger to himself and others, he was placed in the sobering cell. The incident was recorded and the drugs were confiscated on the order of the public prosecutor’s office.
Early on New Year's Eve, two individuals resisted officers at a police station in Differdange. They had been brought there following a physical altercation, during which they rebelled against the police. The public prosecutor's office was notified and it later issued a protocol.
Furthermore, two car accidents took place during the night. At around 22:40, a serious accident occurred on the CR328 in Erpeldange. A driver lost control of her car during a right-hand bend between Erpeldange and Derenbach, resulting in a collision with a tree. She received emergency medical treatment at the scene, before being taken to hospital for further treatment of her serious injuries.
Shortly after midnight, there was a collision between two cars in the Gluck roundabout. A car landed on the construction site barrier near the tunnel (towards Rangwee). The emergency services treated the two slightly injured drivers on site. The driver's alcohol test was positive and his driver's licence was revoked.
Throughout the night, several other drunk drivers had their driving licences revoked due to positive alcohol tests; this was the case in Mersch, Wiltz, Esch-sur-Alzette and Dudelange (two cases).
