The Grand Ducal Police have issued a statement ahead of the New Year celebrations in Luxembourg.

The police recalled that the twelve police stations located across the country, which operate 24 hours a day, will continue to operate on the night of Sunday 31 January 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024 in order to address any "requested or necessary interventions". For any emergencies requiring police intervention, the emergency number 113 remains available to members of the public.

The police recalled that New Year's Eve is "one of the busiest nights of the year" and noted that they were ready to react to "numerous" calls from the public relating to noise pollution caused by festivities or fireworks, "according to their availability and priorities". In this context, the police have appealed to members of the public to respect those who do not wish to or cannot celebrate New Year's Eve and asked others to show a certain tolerance towards those who do wish to celebrate.

In the event of a police intervention, people must follow the instructions of the officers on-site, added the police.

The statement also included "practical tips" for anyone planning to attend a party this New Year's Eve:

  • be careful with your belongings and bags and do not leave them lying around;
  • beware of pickpockets;
  • alcohol is one of the main factors in serious accidents - do not drink and drive;
  • make sure that no one can access your drinks to protect them from unwanted substances;
  • report any suspicious people or objects to the emergency number 113.
