On Wednesday 20 December 2023, the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the month of November 2023.

International protection

A total of 231 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in November 2023, down from 292 in October 2023 and up from 192 in November 2022.

98 decisions on asylum applications were taken in November 2023, down from 144 the previous month, with 40 applicants (down from 70 in October) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.

The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in November 2023 came from Venezuela (42), followed by Eritrea (35) and Syria (31).

So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 2,265 applications for international protection - up from 2,100 during the same period in 2022. Most applications came from Syrians (680; 30%), Eritreans (353; 15.6%) and Sudan nationals (120; 5.3%).

Temporary protection

A total of 52 people contacted the Immigration Directorate to express their interest in applying for temporary protection in November 2023, and subsequently applied for the status (down from 90 requests in October 2023).

More specifically, 51 Ukrainians and one individual from other unspecified country applied for this status in November 2023.

So far this year (as of 30 November 2023), Ukrainian nationals have made up 91.7% of all applicants (900 out of a total of 981) for temporary protection in Luxembourg. Moroccan and Indian nationals represented 0.9% (nine people) and 0.8% (eight people), respectively.

A total of 34 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in November 2023 (down from 83 in October), with 30 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (down from 76 in October).
