The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the month of September 2023.

International protection

A total of 243 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in September 2023, up from 241 in August 2023 but down from 298 in September 2022.

169 decisions on asylum applications were taken in September 2023, down from 212 the previous month, with 61 applicants (down from 91 in August) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.

The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in September 2023 came from Syria (62), followed by Eritrea (33) and Sudan (21).

So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,742 applications for international protection - up from 1,618 during the same period in 2022. Most applications came from Syrians (607; 34.8%), Eritreans (252; 14.5%) and Afghan nationals (91; 5.2%).

Temporary protection

A total of 118 people contacted the Immigration Directorate to express their interest in applying for temporary protection in September 2023, whilst 89 people actually applied for the status (down from 122 requests in August 2023).

More specifically, 81 Ukrainians and eight individuals from other unspecified countries applied for this status in September 2023.

So far this year (as of 30 September 2023), Ukrainian nationals have made up 91.7% of all applicants (770 out of a total of 840) for temporary protection in Luxembourg. Indian and Moroccan nationals each represented 1% (eight people), respectively.

A total of 89 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in September 2023 (down from 120 in August), with 77 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (down from 97 in August).
