On Tuesday 26 September 2023, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel presented the new national action plan to combat antisemitism.
This national action plan, adopted by Luxembourg's Government Council (Cabinet), constitutes the road map of measures to be taken to fight more effectively against the resurgence of antisemitism.
It includes the following measures:
- a better legal and regulatory framework to combat hate crimes and hate speech;
- a better understanding of the phenomenon of antisemitism in all its facets;
- further ensuring the protection of victims and the security of Jewish places of worship;
- continuing to support the memory of the Shoah (Holocaust), education and research;
- highlighting the contribution of Judaism to Luxembourgish history and contemporary society;
- working towards the "resilience" of society, in particular youth, and public officials through education, information and awareness-raising in the fight against antisemitism;
- creating lasting structures to better fight antisemitism.
This strategy also fits within the European context. Katharina von Schnurbein, the first European Commission Coordinator on combating antisemitism, made a working visit to Luxembourg on this occasion. In addition to a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Bettel, meetings with Luxembourg's Minister of Justice, Sam Tanson, and MPs at the Chamber of Deputies (Luxembourg's parliament) were on the agenda. A remembrance ceremony in front of the "Kaddish" monument (memorial to the victims of the Shoah), in the presence of representatives of the Jewish community, closed this working visit.
