On Thursday 2 March 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture confirmed that 87 official guides of the City of Luxembourg have successfully completed a training course organised by the ministry on the subject of the “City of Luxembourg: old quarters and fortifications”, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the brand new guided tour entitled UNESCO4Kids.

Sam Tanson, Minister of Culture, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, and Serge Wilmes, Alderman responsible for tourism, congratulated the 87 official guides on completing the training in advance of the new tourist season.

Raising awareness of the exceptional universal value of the Luxembourg city site, of its perimeter and of the characteristics that have earned it its inclusion in the World Heritage Register, meets one of the requirements of the management of the Unesco property.

The Ministry of Culture has developed several routes to discover the history, and also the historic urban landscape of "City of Luxembourg: old quarters and fortifications": UNESCO Walk, UNESCO Bike Tour, UNESCO for all, UNESCO Leichte Sprache and UNESCO4Kids.

The City of Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, has set up a “UNESCO Visitor Centre” at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture offered initial specialisation training on the Unesco property to tourist guides from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office.

"As the offer on Unesco is diversifying and the number of official and private guides is increasing, we would like all the tourist guides presenting the property 'Ville de Luxembourg: old quarters and fortifications', directly or indirectly, to share a same level of knowledge on Unesco protection and are aware of the messages that Unesco conveys on a global level", explained Minister Tanson.

After two years of the pandemic, we are delighted that the number of tourists in our capital is constantly increasing and we are rather optimistic and confident that the 87 guides we have honoured today will do their part to ensure that 2023 is a very successful year for the capital's tourism sector", concluded Lydie Polfer.

New visit UNESCO4Kids

The UNESCO4Kids training was reserved exclusively for the 25 official guides of the City of Luxembourg working on behalf of the Luxembourg City Tourist Office. This new training now allows them to offer a new offer to groups of young people aged between 6 and 9 or 10 to 12, and offers them to discover the "historic urban landscape" of "Ville de Luxembourg: old quarters and fortifications" on the basis of a pedagogy developed by the Council of Europe in collaboration with Unesco. This encourages the interactive discovery of cultural and natural heritage both through the senses and through intelligence.

Brochures for the UNESCO Walk, UNESCO Bike Tour, UNESCO for All, UNESCO Leichte Sprache and UNESCO4Kids tours can be collected at the reception desk of the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (30 place Guillaume II, L-1648 Luxembourg, tel: 220809).
