On Thursday 29 December 2022, the Directorate of Immigration at Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs published statistics on the number of people applying for international / temporary protection in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for the month of November 2022.

International (permanent) asylum applications

A total of 192 applications wetre received during November 2022, down from 290 in October and up from the 111 applications received in the corresponding month last year (November 2021). To date, a total of 2,100 applications have been received this year, compared to full-year figures of 1,250 and 1,165 for 2021 and 2020 respectively (the 2019, 2018 and 2017 figures respectively were 2,052, 2,204 and 2,318.

Of the 192 applications received in November, 96 were from Syria, 29 were from Eiritrea, 10 from Afghanistan, 6 from Zimbabwe, 5 from both Albania and Palestine, and 41 from other countries. 

To date this year, 950 (45.2%) applications have come from those coming from Syria, 330 (15.7%) from Eiritrea and 165 (7.9%) from Afghanistan. 

Of the 157 applications processed during November, 69 cases were approved, with another 32 receiving subsidiary protection status. 29 applications were refused, 1 was withdrawn, 21 were transferred or declared incomplete and 5 others were inadmissable. Another 3 were waived. 

So far this year, 1,1719 decisions were taken, with 741 people being granted asylum in Luxembourg. In November, 4 applicants were returned (1 to Albania, 2 to Belarus and 1 to Morocco), of which 3 were voluntary and 1 was forced. 

Temporary asylum applications

During November 2022, 131 applications were received for temporary asylum in the Grand Duchy, of which 127 were from Ukraine. 

To date this year, Luxembourg has received 5,244 requests for temporary asylum, of which 4,902 (93.5%) have been from Ukraine. 

In November, 130 decisions were taken, of which 118 were approved and 12 were refused.
