On Tuesday 26 April 2022, Serge Wilmes, first alderman responsible for trade, Mr Patrick Goldschmidt, alderman responsible for the environment, presented the "Cup2Go" initiative for eco-responsible consumption which complements other efforts of the Ville de Luxembourg in the fight against littering.

Anxious to raise awareness of the small gestures that combine to reduce waste, the Ville de Luxembourg is offering citizens to bring their own reusable cups / mugs thanks to which they not only reduce their ecological footprint by giving up single-use cups, but also carry other advantages with the purchase of their hot drinks.

Currently, about fifty establishments in Luxembourg-ville offering take-away hot drinks are participating in the initiative and offer customers with a reusable cup either a discount on the purchase of a hot drink to take away, a stamp on their loyalty card, or a small gift (biscuit, cake, etc.). The establishments can be identified by the “Cup2Go” sticker on their window and are listed on an interactive map that can be consulted online at cup2go.vdl.lu. The interactive map will also soon be available via the cityapp-VDL and on cityshopping.lu.

To mark the launch of the action, the Ville de Luxembourg is giving away 2,500 cups specially created for the occasion. Particular attention has been paid to the choice of materials used. The cup is made of porcelain and has properties favourable to the transport and storage of drinks to take away: its durability, its high resistance to thermal and mechanical shocks and its innocuousness with respect to the environment make the City Cup an ideal companion for daily trips. Its airtight lid seals the cup to prevent any unwanted liquid leakage.

To take part in the competition, all you have to do is fill in the coupon available in the May edition of City, the official magazine of the Vile de Luxembourg distributed to all households across the capital, and submit it before 31 May 2022 in one of the ballot boxes provided for this purpose at the Bieger-Center (44 place Guillaume II), at the City Shopping Info-Point (2 place d'Armes) or at the Pop-up store Julie Conrad Design Studio (25 Rue des Capucins). The winners will be determined by lottery at the end of June.

At a time when the Luxembourg state is preparing a new law on waste management, the launch of "Cup2Go" reflects the commitments described in the Environmental Action Plan of the Ville de Luxembourg in terms of responsible consumption and the prevention of waste and aims in particular to significantly reduce “single-use”. At the same time, the action highlights the businesses that support this initiative to protect the planet.

Establishments wishing to join the initiative can contact the city services (Contact: tel: 4796-4773 / email: environnement@vdl.lu) or register directly on cup2go.vdl.lu.
