Blue Algae in Remerschen lakes; Credit: AGE

Luxembourg's Water Management Administration (AGE) has announced that, following the detection of blue algae (cyanobacteria) in the water at Remerschen, all nautical activities, including swimming, have been prohibited.

The discovery followed regular monitoring of the quality of bathing water: cyanobacteria was observed in the ponds of Remerschen. The toxins produced by these cyanobacteria can be dangerous to humans, aquatic life, pets and livestock.

The LIST Public Research Centre was commissioned to carry out detailed analyses in order to determine the species composition of the cyanobacteria present. The analyses revealed the presence, among others, of the species Microcystis potentially producing toxins and therefore potentially harmful to health.

As a result, a ban on bathing and all nautical activities (e.g. water sports, fishing) has been pronounced with immediate effect. In addition, the Water Management Administration, in consultation with the Department of Health, recommends that the public:
• do not let dogs and other pets drink the water,
• do not eat caught fish.

If anyone experiences any health problems after swimming, please contact your doctor, mentioning possible contact with toxic cyanobacteria.

No prohibitions for other official beaches

Regarding the other official bathing beaches located on Lake Haute-Sûre as well as those on Lake Weiswampach, swimming is still authorised at this stage.
