His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Luxembourg called for solidarity in the face of COVID-19 in a televised address yesterday evening.
In his speech, Grand Duke Henri noted the dramatic increase in coronavirus cases in recent days in Luxembourg and beyond. He acknowledged the "extraordinary work" being carried out by healthcare workers but expressed his worries over the impact of the pandemic on Luxembourg's health sector: "What particularly concerns me is the fact that there have been infections in hospitals, where staff have been infected. Added to this is the news that at the same time there is an upsurge in infections in nursing and care homes".
To assist medical staff in their efforts, the Grand Duke stressed the need for all residents and cross-border workers to assume responsibility and do their part in the fight against the virus. He stated: "Solidarity and respect require us to comply with the rules", adding that "[t]he restrictions that limit our daily life and our freedoms are exceptional measures that should not be taken lightly. But they are currently necessary and adapted in the fight against the pandemic".
Grand Duke Henri also stressed the need to reduce social contacts to an absolute minimum. He concluded: "I am counting on the solidarity of you all, so that we can best control this second wave. We must act now. Only together we can overcome this ordeal".
