Customs Sniffer Dogs Detect nearly €2m in Cash at Findel Airport

Luxembourg's Customs and Excise Agency has confirmed that two of its customs sniffer dogs recently detected close to €2 million in cash at Luxembourg Airport.

During the past three weeks, the interventions of the agency's sniffer dogs, Gwen and Syrah, have proven successful. In three working days and thanks to their fine, well-trained noses, the two Dutch Shepherds detected nearly €2 million in the hold baggage of several individuals at the airport in Findel. The individuals from whom the undeclared money was seized had reportedly planned to smuggle the money into Istanbul in Turkey, an act which constitutes a violation of EU and national law.

European Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 October 2005 on controls of cash entering or leaving the Community provides that cash amounts of €10,000 or more must be declared correctly. In the event of an infringement, the individual(s) in question risk receiving a fine of between €251 and €25,000 and, if applicable, confiscation of the cash.
