The Grand Ducal Police have reported that around 200 people participated in peaceful demonstrations at Luxembourg's borders on the occasion of Europe Day.
The police stated that a total of about 200 people were present at the various Luxembourg-German border regions in Grevenmacher, Wormeldange, Remich, Wasserbillig and Echternacherbrück (Germany) on Saturday. The largest group of 100-150 people reportedly gathered in Echternacherbrück, just across the border in Germany.
The aim of these demonstrations was to celebrate Europe Day in a peaceful manner while also expressing disapproval of closed borders as part of COVID-19 containment measures. The police reportedly ensured that protesters complied with sanitary regulations and accompanied the celebrations on the sidelines. No noteworthy incidents were recorded.
Germany's land and air borders with Luxembourg, France, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark (plus sea border), Italy and Spain have been closed since 16 March, with reopening scheduled for 15 May 2020.
