The Immigration Directorate of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has announced that third-country nationals whose visas or residence permits are set to expire during the coronavirus crisis will be allowed to remain in the Grand Duchy.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Immigration Directorate stressed the importance of limiting the movement of people at the national and international level to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the current crisis situation.

To this end, and in order to ensure that rights conferred by the means of holding these documents be upheld, the Luxembourg government has decided to regularise the stay for third-country nationals in possession of the following documents, which would usually expire after 1 March 2020: short-term and long-term visas; temporary residence permits; residence cards; and residence permits.

Similarly, third-country nationals who are not subject to visa requirements and who have overstayed the normal 90 day limit are permitted to remain in Luxembourg legally for the duration of the state of emergency.

Applications for international protection
The certificates ("pink papers") concerning the registration of an application for international protection which have expired, are extended for the duration of the state of crisis.

The Immigration Directorate has stressed that these measures are automatic and that the persons concerned do not need to take any further action. In addition, no documents will be issued to certify this temporary extension.

The Immigration Directorate added that it is currently not possible to submit files and documents in person; these are to be sent by post instead. Indeed, all counters of the Directorate will remain closed until further notice. Nevertheless, for duly justified emergencies, individual meetings can be organised by appointment. To this end, an email should be addressed to immigration.public@mae.etat.lu, explaining the context of the emergency.
