On Friday morning, Luxembourg's Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn, met with representatives of the "Lëtzebuerger Flüchtlingsrot" (LFR), a platform for associations to work together to pool their experiences and efforts relating to international protection policies and practices in the Grand Duchy.
On this occasion, Minister Asselborn announced the efforts under way by the National Reception Office (ONA), which has replaced OLAI, to increase both the capacity and the quality of the accommodation network. With the entry into force of the law establishing the ONA on 1 January 2020, the Office is now placed under the jurisdiction of Jean Asselborn as Minister of Immigration and Asylum.
In view of the migratory pressure, which Luxembourg continues to face, Minister Asselborn highlighted the continuation of awareness-raising efforts with municipal administrations in order to alleviate the saturation of the 55 structures currently managed by ONA.
Other issues raised during this meeting were the challenges of asylum and voluntary return. Minister Asselborn also recalled that he remains open to criticism regarding the composition of the advisory committee to assess the best interests of unaccompanied minors.
