Parliamentary group leader of Luxembourg's Democratic Party (DP), Eugène Berger, passed away aged 59 on Tuesday 21 January 2020.

The news of Eugène Berger's death, announced yesterday by the DP and other sources, comes following that of his hospitalisation last Friday.

Born on 4 December 1960 in Bettembourg, Eugène Berger worked as a teacher before being elected to the Chamber of Deputies (representing the DP) in 1994. He later served as Secretary of State for the Environment from 1999 to 2004, and most recently served as parliamentary group leader of the DP.

An avid mountaineer, he was also the first Luxembourger to scale Mount Everest (October 1992).

In light of Eugène Berger's death, the Chamber of Deputies has announced the suspension of today's parliamentary session.
