The number of people applying for international protection (asylum) in Luxembourg in July 2019 rose to 133, from 124 the previous month but fell from 239 in July 2018.
To date, 1,195 people have applied for asylum in Luxembourg so far this year, compared to 1,089 in the first seven months of 2018 and 1,366 in the first seven months of 2017.
Africa represents the origin of 59 asylum-seekers (33 from Eritrea alone), 50 from Asia (27 from Syria), 16 from Europe (five from Serbia) and eight from the Americas (all from Venezuela). So far in 2019, most applicants (361) have come from Eritrea, followed by Syria (127) and Afghanistan (90).
161 decisions on asylum applications were taken during July 2019, with 38 gaining refugee status. To date in 2019, a total of 1,366 decisions have been taken resulting in 397 refugees being granted asylum in Luxembourg.
