A fire described by the Grand Ducal Police as "large-scale" started on Thursday afternoon in a field in Luxembourg-Hamm before spreading to a nearby forest.

Shortly after 14:15, a fire was reported by a member of the public who had noticed a straw bale that was burning; the fire subsequently developed into a large-scale fire and spread to the adjacent forest.

The emergency services were called out to tackle the blaze. Both the Val de Hamm and the rue de Hamm had to be completely closed to traffic, with diversions being set up for vehicular traffic, with the roads not reopening until shortly before 18:00.

As the fire spread in the forest, it moved in the direction of a mill, which is why the filling stations in the area were evacuated for reasons of safety. The emergency services managed to prevent the spread of the fire to nearby residential buildings.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
