Tuesday marked the signing of an agreement between Luxembourg and France on cross-border rescue operations.

On 25 June 2019, Luxembourg Interior Minister Taina Bofferding and Jean-Luc Marx, Prefect of the Defence and Security of the East Zone in France, signed a cooperation agreement to provide legal cover for rescue and assistance operations on both sides of the Moselle.

Before the bilateral approval of this text, the radius of intervention of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Services and the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps were generally limited to their national territory. Today, this agreement paves the way for closer cooperation between the fire and rescue departments of the Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps of Luxembourg, who wish to improve the process of treating victims of traffic accidents, fires or other common or special risks arising in the border area.

As part of the implementation of this agreement, the modes of intervention as well as useful operational procedures will be reconciled. Common training and exercises will also be organised to share knowledge, train teams and seek complementarity in the means implemented.

In developing this convention, the partners have shown their shared attention to the security of goods and people in a border area rich in cultural and professional exchanges, modes of transport and in social and economic activities.
