Over the weekend, the Luxembourg Police confiscated several driving licences due to drink driving.
At around 03:00 on Friday 26 April 2019, in Luxembourg City, police officials noticed a car driving at excessive speed. Upon inspection, the officers noted a strong smell of alcohol coming off the driver. Indeed, the driver tested positive for excessive alcohol consumption and the police withdrew the perpetrators's driving licence. The officers then filed a police report.
On Saturday evening, on the order of the public prosecutor's office, the police carried out alcohol checks in Roodt-sur-Syre (RN1) between 22:00 and 23:00 and in Grevenmacher (RN10) between 23:30 and 00:30. The officials checked a total of 184 drivers, ten of whom tested positive for excessive alcohol consumption. The police confiscated two driving licences in total.
Earlier that day, at around 14:40, the police found a driver sleeping behind the wheel in Rue d'Audun in Esch-sur-Alzette. The vehicle was parked on both a disabled and police parking space. The officials found the man to be heavily intoxicated and subsequently confiscated his driving licence. Shortly after, at 16:15, the police checked a suspicious vehicle in Leudelange, finding that the driver was similarly under the influence of alcohol. The officials confiscated the driving licence and filed a report.
Similarly, the police were notified of a heavily intoxicated person who reportedly climbed into a van and headed in the direction of Schumannseck. During the subsequent inspection, it was determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The perpetrator's driving licence was confiscated. Another drink driver lost their licence at around 19:00 on Saturday on Route de Diekirch in Echternach.
Shortly before midnight, the police in Esch-sur-Alzette reported an accident in which no one was injured. Upon inspection, it turned out that one of the two drivers was under the influence of alcohol. Police officers confiscated the driver's licence. The officers went on to confiscate another driving licence on a separate drink driving incident.
Then, at around 01:30, the traffic police on the A6 motorway in the direction of Belgium noticed a vehicle parked in the hard shoulder. The driver claimed to have dodged another vehicle, bumped into the side of the road and suffered a flat tyre, causing him/her to stop on the roadside. The driver later tested positive for excessive alcohol consumption and had to give up his licence. The police filed a report.
Another accident on the A6 occurred at around 03:00. A driver who was under the influence of alcohol reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel and then crashed into a lorry (pictured). The police also withdrew this driver's licence.
Similar incidents occurred on Sunday 28 April, firstly at around 16:30, when the police in the Luxembourg-Gare district noticed a vehicle that drove through two red traffic lights. The car was stopped and the driver inspected. The police confiscated the driver's licence for drink driving. Then, at around 19:15, police officers stopped a car that was swerving on the road between Crauthem and Hellange. The driver, who showed clear signs of excessive alcohol consumption, refused to take an alcohol test. The police subsequently issued the perpetrator with a driving ban and filed a report.
Just two hours later, around 21:15 on Sunday evening, the police intervened in an incident in Holzem, during which two drivers blocked the way of another driver as a result of a disagreement. The officers then found that the two drivers had consumed excessive alcohol. One had to give up his driver's license immediately as a result of a positive alcohol test, whilst the second driver was issued a fine.
