The food safety authorities of Luxembourg today announced that fumonisin contamination has been detected in the cornflour products of the Matias brand.

This product was distributed across Cactus stores at the Luxembourg level, but a wider distribution of the contaminated products has been reported as possible. Although the product in question has been withdrawn from sale in Cactus stores, but some of the inventory was sold.

The cornflour has been contaminated by fumonisins, toxins formed in maize under certain climactic conditions by the fungi of the Fusarium genus. Fumonisins are classified as 'possibly carcinogenic' to humans.

Matias 500g cornflour products with an expiration date of May 2016 and a lot number of 220515169/1; 220515163/1; or 220515168/1 have been contaminated and the Luxembourg public is therefore advised not to consume them.
