A violent brawl between several offenders yesterday afternoon resulted in attacks against police officers and the use of pepper spray and batons against the perpetrators.
At around 16:45, a police patrol arrived on Rue de Strasbourg in the Gare district of Luxembourg City to break up a fight between several individuals who were throwing punches at each other. Goods from neighbouring shops were strewn across the street and the police officers immediately intervened.
In the chaos, one of the main culprits was able to escape on foot, but was swiftly followed by an officer who caught up to him on Rue Glesener. The police struggled to restrain the offender, who fought against the officials, with passers-by also intervening by attempting to free the identified perpetrators from the police.
In the meantime, an official who had stayed at the site became the target of attacks from the 4-6 offenders left behind, resorting to the use of pepper spray and his baton in order to protect himself. Three other people were arrested, two of them following another chase. These individuals were restrained whils the police waited for reinforcement.
After arrests were made, the Grand Ducal Police reported that two men had been victims of an attack by five to six of the perpetrators, who demanded that they hand over their money. When the victims refused, they were brutally beaten up with one victim ending up hospitalised due to the severity of his injuries.
