On Friday 9 October 2015, President of the European Court of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Dean Spielmann, received the honorary distinction of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The Order was presented by Prime Minister, Minister of State Xavier Bettel at the Hôtel de Bourgogne, in the presence of Minister of Justice Félix Braz.
Dean Spielmann became a member of the Luxembourg Bar in 1989, after completion of his studies at the Catholic University of Louvain and Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge. He has taught at the universities of Leuven, Nancy and Luxembourg and is also an associate member of the Institut Grand-Ducal.
Dean Spielmann has been a judge at the European Court of Human Rights since 2004. In 2010 he was elected Section President and in 2012, Vice-President of the Court, before becoming President of the Court in September that same year.
