On Friday 10 October 2015, the Grand Duchy will hold a National Day of Commemoration to dedicated to the struggle of the people of Luxembourg under occupation from 1940 to 1945.
In honour, HRH the Grand Duke of Luxembourg will be taking part in various ceremonies around Luxembourg City, beginning with the laying of a wreath at 'Kanounenhiwwel', the National Monument of Luxembourg Solidarity and the revival of the flame of remembrance. HRH the Grand Duke will visit inside the monument, before saluting the flag bearers, Luxembourg authorities, ambassadors residing in Luxembourg, members of the Steering Committee for the Memory of Resistance, members of the Steering Committee for the Memory of Forced Enlistment, and representatives of various veteran, resistance and forced recruitment associations.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo; Prime Minister, Minister of State Xavier Bettel; and first Deputy Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Sam Tanson; will all join this day of commemoration by laying wreaths at the Monument of Remembrance, or Gëlle Fra. This will be performed in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Étienne Schneider and Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg Army, Romain Mancinelli.
Prime Minister Xavier Bettel will also deliver a speech at the National Monument of Resistance and Deportation, the 'Hinzerter Kräiz', before the grave at the Monument is blessed by a representative of the Catholic Church and the pastor of the Protestant Church of Luxembourg. Wreaths will then be laid at this monument.
