On Sunday 23 August 2015, a man in Esch-sur-Alzette had his dog taken away from him after the animal was locked in the perpetrator's basement in poor condition.
Police were called to the house along Rue Caspar-Mathias after receiving a call from a concerned neighbour, who reported that the dog had been kept in the dark cellar for a prolonged period. The dog owner was asked to open the door to the cellar, at which point the police discovered the animal locked in a home-made cage.
Signs of the unkempt condition of the dog were apparently evident, as the Grand Ducal Police reported that the room smelled strongly of faeces and urine and that no food or water had been provided for the dog.
The cellar owner then stated that he was looking after the dog for a few weeks, claiming that the animal in fact belonged to a colleague. However, when the man was unable to specify who the colleague was or provide any further information, the prosecutor was informed of the incident and the dog was taken away.
