The Lithuanian Culture Club, part of the Cercle Culturel des Institutions Européennes (EU Cultural Circle), has announced details of a straw art-making workshop (Sodai) which will be held on Saturday 1 March 2025, from 10:30 to 14:00, at the Foyer Européen in Luxembourg-Gare (10 Rue Heinrich Hein).
According to the club: “Straw gardens (also known as straw mobiles) are among the most enigmatic types of Lithuanian folk art. Sodai can be made for any occasion: Easter and Christmas, celebrating marriages and baptisms and other ritual events. To protect the home, they are hung above the table where the family gathers for their meals.”
In 2023, Sodai was inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The club stated that the basics of making straw gardens can be picked up within a few hours, but more complex creations require mathematical and spatial thinking, as well as exercising diligence.
The club will provide all materials. Participants are advised to bring a box or sturdy bag to carry their Sodai creation home.
Registration is obligatory and costs €35. To register, email: kulturalux@gmail.com
