On Thursday 15 June 2023, Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development, Claude Haagen, met the leaders of the Ettelbruck slaughterhouse during an interview in Ettelbruck to establish whether its capacities sufficed in view of an increased number of animals to be slaughtered.

Following the announcement of the forthcoming closure of the slaughtering activity at the Wecker slaughterhouse, the question of whether the Ettelbruck slaughterhouse capacities were sufficient was raised in many times.

"I am happy to hear that the capacities of the Ettelbruck slaughterhouse are amply sufficient to meet the current and future demand of the sector," announced the minister after the meeting.

For Claude Haagen, Luxembourg agriculture needs a slaughterhouse located on its territory. The central geographical location of the Ettelbruck site will continue to guarantee short journeys from the farm to the slaughterhouse, which is in the interest of animal welfare, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Thanks to the expansion of its activities and the modernisation of its infrastructures, the Ettelbruck slaughterhouse will continue to be an important partner for the national agrifood sector. With the agrarian law, the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development has the means to co-finance any future investments by farmers in Ettelbruck.
