Luxembourg's Ministry of State has reported that Prime Minister Luc Frieden attended the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June 2024, at the invitation of the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd.
This summit, which brought together nearly 100 states, mainly aimed at developing a common understanding of the possible path towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, based on the Charter of the United Nations and the fundamental principles of international law.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Frieden recalled the importance for Luxembourg of a stable and peaceful international order based on international law. He considered that the participation of states from all over the world in this summit constituted a success and a strong message to Russia and the rest of the world.
He expressed Luxembourg's wish to restore peace and stability in Europe in collaboration with Ukraine and its international partners. Sustainable peace in Ukraine requires respect for international law and state sovereignty, he noted. "In a civilised world, country borders cannot be changed by force," stressed Prime Minister Frieden.
He added that "the current conflict in Ukraine goes beyond European borders, particularly in terms of global food security" and that "respect for international law by all actors is a life insurance for peace and stability in Europe. Beyond that, we cannot accept that the current proliferation of violence spreads further, whether in Ukraine or elsewhere."
The ministry added that a majority of the states present at the summit adopted a joint declaration which is expected to create the basis for a negotiating framework for a future peace agreement.
