On Monday 8 January 2024, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden paid his first working visit to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.
Luxembourg's Ministry of State reported that the visit began with a face-to-face meeting between Prime Minister Frieden and Chancellor Scholz, followed by a working meeting allowing an exchange on European and international current affairs.
The ministry added that this working visit highlighted Luxembourg and Germany's "excellent" bilateral relations. Prime Minister Frieden reiterated the "unequivocal desire" of the new government of Luxembourg to continue close collaboration with Germany, particularly on cross-border and bilateral issues but also on European issues.
The two heads of government discussed potential avenues for bilateral collaboration in the economic field, as well as strengthening cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
The working meeting was also an opportunity to address current European and international issues, including in particular Russian aggression against Ukraine. Prime Minister Frieden and Chancellor Scholz stressed the importance of solidarity with Ukraine but also noted that both their governments considered sharing the burden fairly, both at the EU and NATO levels, to be essential.
The meeting facilitated coordination between the two countries ahead of the European Council on 1 February 2024, during which discussions in Brussels will focus on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework.
