Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, met with his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, as part of a working visit in Berlin on Monday 5 October 2020.
The meeting, which took place at the German Foreign Office, served as an opportunity to take stock of bilateral cooperation between Luxembourg and Germany in the current context marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. The foreign ministers focussed in particular on the various measures that have been taken to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Minister Jean Asselborn recalled the importance of cross-border work for inhabitants on both sides of the border and consequently of free movement in the Greater Region.
The meeting also allowed the ministers to exchange views on current international and European issues. Ministers Jean Asselborn and Heiko Maas notably discussed the situation in Belarus as well as tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
On the sidelines of his visit to Berlin, Minister Jean Asselborn visited the premises of the Börsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels where the book “Jean Asselborn. Eine politische Biografie” (Jean Asselborn: a Political Biography) was presented in the presence of Minister Heiko Maas. The book presentation was followed by a discussion, moderated by Deutschlandfunk journalist Stephan Detjen, between Luxembourg and Germany's foreign minister on European affairs.
