Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, has issued a statement regarding the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The statement follows the publication of preliminary test results by the Charité hospital in Berlin, where Alexei Navalny, a leading member of the political opposition in Russia, is being treated after falling ill on a domestic flight from Tomsk in Siberia last week. Medical results have indicated that Mr Navalny was poisoned.

In this context, Minister Jean Asselborn stated: "I join my EU colleagues in wishing Mr Navalny a prompt and full recovery and expressing our sympathy to his family at this difficult time. It is imperative that the Russian authorities initiate an independent and transparent investigation without delay, in order to identify those responsible for this criminal act and bring them to justice".
