Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, was in London on Monday for a series of political meetings.
In England's capital city, Minister Asselborn met with the Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom, Philip Hammond, the Secretary of State for Europe of the United Kingdom, David Lidington, and the director of the Centre for European Reform, Charles Grant.
Following the recent terrorist attack in Sousse in Tunisia, which claimed many British victims, Minister Asselborn presented the condolences of the Luxembourg Government and expressed its solidarity with the United Kingdom authorities.
The Ministers then discussed in detail the priorities of the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council as well as issues of European politics, including the humanitarian tragedies in the Mediterranean and of the migration agenda of the commission, before addressing the situation in Greece.
The discussions also focused on the political situation in the UK as well as role of Britain in the EU. The British ministers informed Minister Asselborn about the latest developments concerning the future referendum on keeping the United Kingdom within the EU. In this context, Jean Asselborn stressed that "it is clear that maintaining the UK in the EU is of strategic importance, maintaining values and the European spirit, also freedom of movement".
