Details:

Every year on the third Sunday in Lent, people in Luxembourg celebrate ‘Bretzelsonndeg’ (Pretzel Sunday). The pretzels represent two lovers arm in arm, and the tradition suggests that a man should offer his lover a pretzel on Pretzel Sunday. Should she accept the gift, it is her turn to offer him eggs on Easter Sunday in return. Should she not accept the gift, she gives him a basket, hence rejects him. This is where the Luxembourgish expression ‘de kuerf kreien’ (to be given the basket) originates from. Today, the tradition can also be reversed, the girl gives her lover the pretzel.
