Details:
Luxembourg's Grand Théâtre will be showcasing two performances of "Acosta Danza" by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions on 29 and 30 November 2019 at 20:00.
With works by Raúl Reinoso, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Pontus Lidberg and Christopher Bruce, international ballet superstar Carlos Acosta brings his critically acclaimed Cuban company to the Théâtres de la Ville ahead of his exciting appointment as Artistic Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in January 2020.
A new work, "Satori", by Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso, illustrates a quest for spiritual illumination, a journey into the interior with several abstract scenes: the initial questions, the search, the stagnation, the defeat of obstacles and, finally, the discovery of truth and light. "Satori" is set to an original score by Pepe Gavilondo combining electronic, acoustic and folk sounds.
In "Mermaid", Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui places a contemporary dancer in pointe shoes. Like a fish out of water or a stranger in a strange land, the mermaid looks for help and guidance. For "Mermaid", Cherkaoui’s long-term collaborator Fabiana Piccioli designed the lights. The music, composed together with Woojae Park, takes inspiration from the traditional Korean songs of the sea.
In "Paysage, Soudain, la nuit", visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg approaches Cuban culture through rhumba, a genre of traditional music with African roots. Taking the score by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer as his starting point, Lidberg has created a celebration of youth between twilights and dawns.
Finally, "Rooster", choreographed by Christopher Bruce, pays tribute to the music of the 60s and 70s. Taking its name from "Little Red Rooster", the piece shows preening cockerels that symbolise the stylish but chauvinistic young men of this period.
