Details:
On the occasion of Solidarity Day of World Heritage Cities, celebrated annually on 8 September since 1993, Luxembourg City has planned a UNESCO walk and an Urban Timetravel visit to 19th-century Pfaffenthal.
Created in 1991 following the first meeting of World Heritage Cities in Québec, Canada, the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) was officially founded on 8 September 1993 in Fez, Morocco. Since the inclusion of "Luxembourg, its old quarters and fortifications" on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1994, the City of Luxembourg has been a member of the OWHC and Mayor Lydie Polfer has been entrusted with the mandate of Vice-President of the organisation for the period from 2019 to 2021.
To commemorate this occasion, the day is celebrated from its foundation under the flagship of the Solidarity Day of World Heritage Cities and invites residents and visitors to Luxembourg to exchange and discuss around the theme of urban heritage protection.
UNESCO walk
On Tuesday 8 September 2020, the Lëtzebuerg City Museum in collaboration with the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) is offering guided tours of the UNESCO walking trail. This walk immerses visitors in a striking natural environment where they can (re)discover the impressive remains of the ancient city and thus better understand the role that the city played in European history as well as the reasons for its inclusion on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List. The walk passes halfway up the fortifications via the Pétrusse park, the Corniche and the ramparts and crosses the old town.
Participation in the walk is free, however registration at www.luxembourg-city.com is compulsory. Tours will be given in French at 11:00, in Luxembourgish at 14:30 and in English at 15:30.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend a presentation of the UNESCO Visitor Centre by its curator, Gilles Genot, and can receive a free copy of the recipe book of the OWHC cities (within the limit of available stock).
Urban Timetravel
Thanks to 3D glasses, visitors can return to the Pfaffenthal district of the 19th century, undertaking a bus trip through the narrow streets of the suburb. Enriched with photographs, animated images, sounds and music, this multisensory experience immerses visitors in the daily life of the district on board an animated carriage, pulled by virtual horses.
Six guided tours will be offered free of charge throughout the day, each time welcoming three participants (respectively five members of the same family). Tours will depart at 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. The visit lasts 20 minutes. Reservations should be made via email: touristinfo@lcto.lu or tel.: 222-809.
