Unity Foundation, a Luxembourg-based NGO, is organising the event "Youth - Protagonists of social change" on Friday 15 November 2019 at 19:00 at the Abbaye de Neumünster.
At the core of the event will be an exchange of experiences generated by a screening of "Mercy's Blessing", a short film that empowers young people, as well as a keynote speech by May Taherzadeh, the film's director.
May Taherzadeh is an independent filmmaker who has directed award-winning short films in more than fifteen countries and on six continents. Born in the United Kingdom, she grew up in Southern Africa (Malawi, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe), is of Iranian origin and currently lives in the Netherlands with her family. Her short film "Mercy's Blessing" has won twelve international awards and was officially selected at 21 film festivals.
In addition, the film has been used in schools, universities, community centres and workplaces in over 100 countries to raise awareness about gender equality and education and to inspire audiences to take action. It has received support from international organisations, such as UNICEF and the EU, which have also used it for campaigns and events to advance discourses on gender equality and education.
Since 2016, Unity Foundation has also been using this short film to initiate workshops as part of its development education campaign, co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Through the implementation of interactive workshops, the objective of the campaign is to raise awareness among young people about the role they can play in combatting injustices encountered in their own environment and committing themselves to the well-being of others.
