Details: The British Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg (BCC) has announced that it is organising a luncheon on Wednesday 1 February 2017 from 12:00 at La Table du Belvedere (4 Place de l'Europe, L-1499 Kirchberg) with guest speaker Etienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister, addressing the topic of Space Mining (The Spaceresources.lu initiative).
In February 2016 The Government of Luxembourg announced its willingness to engage more actively in the development of a particular domain of the space sector: the utilisation of space resources. Since the middle of the eighties, when Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) was created, Luxembourg has been actively making use of orbital resources in the form of geostationary orbital positions and satellite communication frequencies. The country will now focus on another type of resources, the materials that can be found on celestial bodies, such as asteroids. The use of those resources hold a large potential for future technological innovation, economic activity and growth with a promise of ecological and social benefits. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Etienne Schneider, will present the initiative and the main elements of the strategy to develop this new economic sector.
Étienne Schneider joined the government in February 2012 as Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade in the coalition government formed by the Christian Social Party (CSV) and the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). Following the legislative elections of 20 October 2013, Étienne Schneider was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy, Minister of Internal Security, Minister of Defence on 4 December 2013 in the coalition government formed by the Democratic Party (DP), the LSAP and the Green Party (“déi gréng”).
