Details:  Famous English Linguist to Deliver Public Lecture at Forum Geesseknäppchen

On Wednesday 12 October 2016 at 19:00, Luxembourg welcomes Britain’s most famous linguist, Professor David Crystal for a public lecture; Lycée Aline Mayrisch, in close cooperation with ALEA (Luxembourg Association of Enseignants d'Anglais) and the International School Luxembourg, have invited the foremost expert on the English language to give a public talk entitled 'The Story of English in 100 Words' at the Forum Geesseknäppchen.

Based on his eponymous book published in 2013, author and linguist David Crystal has a closer look at a hundred words from the English language. In addition to the etymological and historical background, Crystal is fascinated by the little stories on the side as he offers his readers ‘an entertaining archaelogical language dig’.

From the 5th century 'roe', probably the oldest word for ‘deer’, his list extends to a fast-changing modern world with a term like 'Twittersphere'. All of these English words are presented in a fresh and highly entertaining way. The public talk will explain how these have been chosen and will focus on a selection of some of them.

Professor Crystal certainly makes us curious about the way we use language and how meaning changes in the course of time.
