Details: On Saturday, 10 September 2016, the European Space Agency (ESA) is inviting 100 Luxembourg residents to a full day of public debate on space as a European service.
Held simultaneously in the 22 Member States of ESA, the event will take place in the Grand Duchy between 09:00 and 16:30 pm at the Tramsschapp Cultural Centre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg. Luxembourg is involved in transnational research projects in the multi-year programme of ESA, in which the Grand Duchy, since 2012, co-chairs with Switzerland.
Candidates interested in participating in this debate do not need to have any specific knowledge about space. Bringing together 2,000 people in different countries, this day aims to involve citizens in decision-making to address major social challenges, to put space at the service of all and to outline the future for the next generations through technological innovation, exploration and international cooperation in space.
During the event, Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, Etienne Schneider, will present the SpaceResources.lu government initiative that aims to implement a strategy to carry out the exploration and use of resources found on near-Earth objects (NEOs) such as asteroids.
The event on 10 September is structured into several sessions which cover matters such as current space policies or future space programmes. So that the 22 national summary conclusions can be assembled in a report to the European level, the debates in the different countries will be held on the same instructions and focus on the same issues.
Participation in the debate, which will be in small groups in French or German, is free-of-charge. Interested individuals must be aged at least 16 years and are invited to register until 28 August 2016 at the following address: www.citizensdebate.space. Lunch will be provided and coffee breaks will be organised.
