Details: The Opderschmelz cultural centre in Dudelange is to host the 5th annual jazz festival, Like a Jazz Machine, over four days next month, from 5-8 May 2016.
The reputation of Dudelange as Luxembourg’s City of Jazz is firmly established. By creating the festival “Like a Jazz Machine” in 2012, the founders have started a powerful generator of energies, visions and jazz moods. Relying on their ultimate commitment to jazz, the CCRD opderschmelz and the cultural department of the City have renewed their efforts in the fifth edition of their international jazz festival by organising a common platform for the artists, the public, the professionals and cultural workers, as well as the associations and societies interested in partnership.
“Like a Jazz Machine” 2016 offers an open range of contemporary currents in jazz, by highlighting original creations and young talents, as well as focusing on cross-border incursions in other musical genres. 17 bands and ensembles, assembling over 80 musicians, are going to share the stage of the CCRD opderschmelz during a period of four consecutive days.
Many artists in this year’s programme come back to the roots and pay tribute to mythical figures like Woody Guthrie (Francesco Bearzatti), Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix (Philippe Gordiani), and many represent new exciting trends. The festival celebrates jazz in all its forms, and ranges from tradition to modernity, so that another focus lies on artists experimenting new music trends, unusual ways, audacious treats (Calibro 35, Nostalgia 77, Hidden Orchestra), on those working in delicate embroidery, ultimate precision and colorful minimalism (Orioxy, Bojan Z & Julien Lourau, Tatsuya Nakatani & Assif Tsahar) but also on the confirmed artists (Rita Marcotulli’s all-stars band) and “house” musicians exploring new sounds (Bugge Wesseltoft, Sylvain Rifflet). A unique occasion was offered to several musicians to create in residence at the CCRD opderschmelz, with complete artistic freedom, yet tightly linked with the venue and the festival - Sylvain Rifflet is artist in residence 2016, Pit Dahm w/ Harmen Fraanje worked at opderschmelz to prepare their new CD, Rubrica Art Ensemble worked on a new project with music written by composers from Luxembourg. The pure pleasure to play is the common denominator, it is shared by all the musicians, and finds its most festive and enjoyable expression in the closing concert with Fred Wesley & the New JB’s who personifies one of the most influential musical currents of our days.
A particular emphasis is again given to Jazz from Luxembourg, more dynamic and creative than ever before. For the most part, they also play on an international scale where they are often leaders (Pit Dahm. Maxime Bender) and/or playing with internationally renowned jazzmen(Harmen Fraanje with Pit Dahm, Manu Codjia with Maxime Bender, Sigurdur Flosason with Jeff Herr). Throughout the event, creations, encounters and challenges are to take place around the convergence of various cultures, generations and styles in a large melting pot, and in a spirit of exchange and conviviality.
“Like a Jazz Machine” is an urban and eclectic festival for all ages, dedicated to enhance various moods and to keep on turning the resourceful machineries of today’s jazz all over the City of Dudelange, the whole of Luxembourg and the extended European borderland.
